Things To Do When Moving Into An Apartment

Just finding an apartment in the right area and neighborhood that falls within your budget is not enough. It means you just managed to overcome the first hurdle of finding the right apartment. But it doesn't guarantee that it's fit to live in.

It is a must that you check each and every nook and corner of your potential apartment. Make sure that if there is anything in the apartment that needs repair or replacement all those are pointed out to the landlord and ensure they take care of them before you move in.

Ideally the first thing that you should be doing when entering into your potential new rental apartment in College Station is to walk into the bathroom and turn on the shower and check for the temperature of the water. Check how long it takes to get the hot or warm water to flow. Also do not forget to check the water pressure unit. Leave the shower on until you leave the unit. If the water coming out of the shower is cold by that time you leave there is a possibility that you will have trouble with the availability of hot water in the mornings. In that case, try to figure out if it can be fixed. Also find out if the in-unit water heater, if any, is shared with multiple units because it is a factor that decides on the availability of hot water to the apartment. Regardless of the size of the heater, if it is shared with other units you might have problems with its usage.

Check for the water heater and furnace and make sure they are rust free. If you find there rocks, stones, or other debris outside the furnace or the heater it might be an indication to possible leaks. This could also mean leakage of carbon monoxide.

Make sure that there are sufficient safety features installed in the apartment, like the smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, etc. You must check for them not only inside the apartment but also in the hallways and the common areas.

Check for leaks in plumbing by checking the toilets, faucets, and the pipes in the kitchen cabinet. Make sure all the appliances that comes with the rental apartment are in good shape and works properly. If there is no washer or dryer in the apartment ask to see the common laundry area and ensure that its accessibility is limited to the residents only and that the area is well lit.

Check the cabinets, drawers, and closets for sufficient space and also look for evidences of insects or rodents. Look at the ceiling and walls for any signs of water leakages or discoloration. The discoloration would be an indication of moulds. If there are cracks and signs of repair on the walls it could be an indicator for a breech in the building foundation or water seepage problems. Make sure all things are in place before you sign the deal.
